1/18/86 - GCW Superstars

1/18/86 - GCW Superstars (TAPED: 12/17/85)
LOCATION: Mid-Hudson Civic Center - Poughkeepsie, NY

Welcome to GCW Superstars! Gorilla Monsoon & Mark Niemiller were with us again as we start your weekend off right with the best wrestling in the world. Monsoon ran down the show, saying we'd have Junkyard Dog in action, as well as a rematch from MSG with Koko B. Ware taking on Bad News Brown! Not only that, but we would see the return of Robert Gibson as the Rock 'N Roll Express would be competing! And in the main event, Rick Martel meets "Adorable" Adrian Adonis! But first to Howard Finkel for our first contest of the day.

Big John Studd (w/ Bobby Heenan) vs. Jeff Crippley/Al Navarro/Mike Saxon

One of the staples of Andre the Giant's career has been handicap matches. With Andre's size, he would often take on two opponents instead of one to honestly, give the opposition a fair chance. Studd has been trying to show he is the "true" giant in professional wrestling and wanted to go one step further, taking on 3 men today in our opening contest of Superstars. Even with 3, Studd threw them all around like ragdolls and picked up a quick win.

Big John Studd defeated Jeff Crippley, Al Navarro and Mike Saxon when Studd pinned Saxon with the Backbreaker in 0:01:26.
Rating: -* 1/2

After the match, as has become habit, Bobby Heenan took the house mic and reminded everyone that Big John Studd was indeed the TRUE giant of professional wrestling and that Andre the Giant was an afterthought. Monsoon commented that Studd better hope he injured Andre badly enough that he never comes back, because Andre is not a man you want to make angry. Niemiller said that Studd isn't afraid of any man, especially not a hobbled freak like Andre the Giant. Monsoon told Niemiller he better watch what he says too because Andre might come after him as well, leaving Niemiller looking a little more than worried.

Junkyard Dog vs. Don Driggers

JYD got the crowd up on his feet with his dance moves and antics en route to an easy win.

Junkyard Dog pinned Don Driggers with the Thump Powerslam in 0:02:30.
Rating: -*

Koko B. Ware vs. Bad News Brown

Koko B. Ware shocked the world when he was the man to answer Bad News Brown's open challenge at the year-end show, and not only that, but he actually pinned Brown's shoulders to the mat. Brown is somebody who has something you could describe as a temper, and he does not take being upstaged very well. In this rematch, Brown went right after Koko, wanting to hurt him in a hurry. Doing this left him open to several counter attacks with Koko's speed, leaving Bad News flustered. Koko even almost got the win again after hitting a sunset flip, the same move he pinned him with in New York, but Brown got out just in time. That would turn out to be Koko's best shot as Bad News would catch him with a low blow that the referee missed, followed up with the Ghetto Blaster, and got his win back.

Bad News Brown pinned Koko B. Ware with the Ghetto Blaster in 0:06:12.
Rating: ** 1/2

A video package on the newest tag team in GCW, the Road Warriors, aired next, highlighting their intimating look and great power. At the end of the video, "COMING IN THREE WEEKS" flashed across the screen, something surely the rest of the tag team division in Global Championship Wrestling is not looking forward to.

The Rock 'N Roll Express vs. Gino Carabello/Rick Jacobs

Speaking of great tag teams, it was nice to see the Rock 'N Roll Express back in action. Robert Gibson has been on the shelf thanks to Sgt. Slaughter & Stan Hansen, but he looked better than ever as the former tag team champions made short work of their opponents today. During the match, an insert promo with Morton & Gibson told everyone that Gibson was healthy and he was fired up, and that RnR can't wait to get their hands on the Unholy Alliance and bring the World Tag Team Titles back where they belong. Niemiller scoffed at that, saying that if Gibson was smart he'd just stay away before the Unholy Alliance did even worst to him than they did last time. Monsoon thought that was ridiculous and said that everyone knows the Rock 'N Roll Express will never back down to anyone.

The Rock 'N Roll Express (Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson) defeated Gino Carabello and Rick Jacobs when R. Morton pinned Jacobs after a small package in 0:03:32.
Rating: 1/2*

A shorter version of the Live Event Report this week as "Mean" Gene Okerlund went over the happenings of the show in Boston last week, showing footage of Sgt. Slaughter & Stan Hansen regaining the World Tag Team Titles. Okerlund said that next week on Superstars, he would have a lot of big news about the upcoming few months in GCW!

Rick Martel vs. "Adorable" Adrian Adonis (w/ Jimmy Hart)

We have never seen Rick Martel in a mood like this. Adrian Adonis got under his skin last week during the Flower Shop, and it led to this encounter. Martel never took his eyes off of Adonis, and as soon as the bell rang, Martel was all over the Adorable One. Jimmy Hart was yelling at referee Tommy Young to disqualify Martel for how relentless he was on the attack. Adonis took a powder to get some separation from Martel, but it didn't work as Martel followed him out and continued to pummel him. Martel slammed Adonis' head off of the announce table, causing Niemiller to scream like a girl. Meanwhile, Young was delivering the count. Martel didn't hear it or didn't care, tearing into Adonis until both men were counted out.

Adrian Adonis and Rick Martel battled to a double countout in 0:02:02.
Rating: * 1/2

Martel was still throwing punches before Jimmy Hart tried to get Adonis away, eating a punch of his own. Adonis & Hart eventually did manage to get away as the fans cheered wildly for Martel. Niemiller said that Martel is dangerous and should be kicked out of Global Championship Wrestling. Monsoon said if you want to blame anyone, blame King Kong Bundy and Bobby Heenan for creating this monster.
