5/24/86 - GCW Superstars

5/24/86 - GCW Superstars (TAPED: 5/13/86)
LOCATION: Mid-Hudson Civic Center - Poughkeepsie, NY

We have a big Saturday night full of great GCW action, as not only do we have our huge show in Pittsburgh tonight, but we also have an episode of GCW Superstars! Gorilla Monsoon & Mark Niemiller were here as always to run down the show, which will feature Arn Anderson, Rick Martel, Adrian Adonis, and two big feature matches. We will see "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan take on "Gorgeous" Jimmy Garvin, and in what is sure to be a hard-hitting affair, The Barbarian faces a tough test against Sgt. Slaughter! Not only that, but The Power Company will respond to last week's challenge by Ted DiBiase & Barry Windham!

"Hacksaw" Jim Duggan vs. "Gorgeous" Jimmy Garvin (w/ Precious)

Duggan came within an eyelash of winning the Television Title last week, but he was right back in action this week taking on Jimmy Garvin. Gorgeous Jimmy has looked great since breaking out on his own again, and honestly, he looked better than you might think against Hacksaw. Garvin was trying to get Duggan frustrated by hitting and running, dipping to the outside when Duggan would try to get a hold of him. Hacksaw finally had enough and went to the floor too, knocking Garvin around. Unfortunately for Duggan, he lost track of the count, and both men were counted out. Hacksaw jumped back in the ring and pleaded with Joey Marella, but this match was over. Niemiller commented on how stupid Duggan was to get counted out like that. Monsoon was not happy with that, but did mention that these recent frustrations could be building up for Hacksaw.

Jim Duggan and Jimmy Garvin battled to a double countout in 0:03:21.

Backstage now with Jimmy Hart's team of Dino Bravo & Hercules, the Power Company, standing by with Lord Alfred Hayes. Hayes asked for their answer to the challenge laid forth by Ted DiBiase & Barry Windham a week ago. The Mouth of the South cackled and said it was laughable to think that DiBiase & Windham could get along to best the most dominant team in wrestling, the Power Company. Hart makes comments about how Windham was right and DiBiase is selfish, and that DiBiase will stab Windham in the back as soon as he turns it. Bravo & Hercules talked next and each said something not fully coherent, but the gist of it was clear - challenge accepted. The match will take place tonight in Pittsburgh.

"The Enforcer" Arn Anderson (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan) vs. John Centeno

Arn Anderson will be in the big 6-man tonight, and he looked good making short work out of John Centeno today.

Arn Anderson pinned John Centeno with the Gourdbuster in 0:02:01.
Rating: * 1/2

Rick Martel vs. Ron Shaw

Rick Martel was all business today. No smile, no wasted motion, clearly focused on Ricky Steamboat tonight. Poor Ron Shaw got caught by this buzzsaw and had no chance against Martel.

Rick Martel made Ron Shaw submit to the Boston Crab in 0:03:04.
Rating: * 1/2

After the match, RICKY STEAMBOAT & BOBBY HEENAN came out, but they made sure to stay far away from the ring. They also had a microphone. The Brain ran Martel down as a choke artist, and a man full of excuses. He made light of Martel claiming that it was Steamboat who cost him the World Title at Super Cade II when in actuality, he lost because he can't win the big one. Martel was practically foaming at the mouth, begging Steamboat to come down to the ring and fight him. The Dragon started that way but turned back, grabbing the mic and saying he would kick Martel's butt tonight instead, leading to a lot of boos from the audience and an enraged Martel in the ring.

Lord Alfred Hayes caught up with Junkyard Dog backstage. JYD had a few choice words for Honky Tonk Man, namely that he doesn't believe for a second that HTM "accidentally" pulled his tights to win last week. Hayes brought up HTM saying that he would be in JYD's corner tonight in his match against Jimmy Garvin. JYD made it very clear - "If you come down to the ring, Honky, I'm going to take a bite out of you."

"Adorable" Adrian Adonis (w/ Jimmy Hart) vs. Paul Christy

Adrian Adonis was as flamboyant as ever, makeup caked on to a ridiculous degree. Paul Christy looked like he didn't even want to touch Adonis, but the Adorable One did that for him by perpetrating an all out assault to pick up a quick win on the program.

Adrian Adonis made Paul Christy submit to the Goodnight Irene in 0:02:30.

Not a lot of new news today on the LER. "Mean" Gene ran down tonight's card, shilled the chance for surprises and potential title changes, etc. - anything to get people to buy tickets. He did mention that next week on Superstars, the first matches for our Tacoma debut would officially be announced.

The Barbarian vs. Sgt. Slaughter

This was a feature match the audience was really looking forward to. The Barbarian has stormed GCW and quite frankly beaten up everybody who has gotten in his way. He has never faced anyone like Sgt. Slaughter though, who is one of the most dangerous wrestlers in all the world. But even someone has tough as Slaughter didn't know how to contend with the brute force of The Barbarian. Slaughter kept trying to overpower The Barbarian, and The Barbarian kept turning the tables and over powering Slaughter. It was when The Barbarian showed his greatest feat of strength when he had Slaughter over his head in a Gorilla Press, which is when STAN HANSEN ran in and nailed Barbarian in the back with his cowbell to cause the blatant disqualification!

The Barbarian defeated Sgt. Slaughter by disqualification in 0:05:10.
Rating: * 3/4
[Stan Hansen interfered against The Barbarian.]

The Unholy Alliance was looking to put The Barbarian out of commission, but they didn't get much of a chance to as THE ROAD WARRIORS ran down and helped Barbarian clear the ring of Slaughter & Hansen. The broadcast went off the air with Barbarian, Hawk, & Animal standing tall in the ring.

Be sure to tune in next week! We will have the fallout from tonight's Pittsburgh show, and the first announcement of contests for our Tacoma debut! In action will be Ricky Steamboat, as well as Bad News Brown! Animal of The Road Warriors will meet Big John Studd, and in the main event, Tully Blanchard defends the Television Title against former World champion Bob Backlund!
