October 31, 1970 - Memorial Auditorium - Lowell, MA

The Cripplers (Ray Stevens and Nick Bockwinkel) defeated Pedro Morales and Thunderbolt Patterson when R. Stevens pinned Thunderbolt with the Bombs Away Kneedrop in 0:12:31.
Rating: *** 1/4

We were guaranteed to see new tag team champions tonight as our tournament began with The Cripplers taking on Pedro Morales & Thunderbolt Patterson. Morales & Patterson have teamed off and on in the past, but Ray Stevens & Nick Bockwinkel have focused all of their energy onto their team and it showed in this one. Stevens hit the Bombs Away Kneedrop on Thunderbolt to get the 1-2-3 and move to the semi-finals.

The Graham Brothers (Luke Graham and Billy Graham) defeated The Minnesota Wrecking Crew (Gene Anderson and Ole Anderson) when L. Graham pinned O. Anderson after the Double Thumb to the Throat in 0:09:12.
Rating: ***

We got to see the official in-ring debut of Billy Graham in our next first round match as he teamed with his brother Luke against the Minnesota Wrecking Crew. Luke Graham has been perhaps the most feared man in GCW for years, and his brother Billy has a lot of the same qualities. The Minnesota Wrecking Crew are a brother tandem as well, and know what it's like to hold the World Tag Team Titles. The Andersons are the better technical wrestlers, but they simply got blitzed by the brute force of the Grahams, who will take on the Cripplers in the semi-finals.

Bobo Brazil and Peter Maivia defeated Chief Jay Strongbow and Wahoo McDaniel when Brazil pinned Strongbow with the Coco Butt in 0:09:42.
Rating: ** 1/4

Chief Jay Strongbow & Wahoo McDaniel had an impressive World Tag Team Title reign earlier this year, and wanted nothing more than to get the titles back around their waists. The problem is they had to take on "High Chief" Peter Maivia and the former World champion Bobo Brazil. It looked like the Native Americans were overconfident feeling that being former champs, they had this tournament in the bag. Brazil & Maivia had other ideas though as Brazil again proved how sudden and dangerous his Coco Butt is. He caught Strongbow by surprise with it and got the pin to move one step closer to the coveted tag team titles.

Crusher & Bruiser (The Crusher and Dick the Bruiser) defeated Bill Watts and Terry Funk when Crusher pinned T. Funk with the Bolo Punch in 0:17:21.
Rating: ** 1/2
[Lou Albano interfered against Terry Funk.]

The final first round match pit Bill Watts & Terry Funk against the former 5-time tag team champions, Dick the Bruiser & The Crusher. Bruiser & Crusher feel that the titles should have been returned to them as they shouldn't have lost them in the first place, but they had to wrestle the match anyway. They would end up getting the victory after an unexpected assist. Near the end of the match after Terry Funk had hurt Crusher on the floor and threw him back in the ring, DORY FUNK JR. ran down and blindsided Terry with his own branding iron! Dory tossed Terry back in the ring where Crusher hit the Bolo Punch to punch his team's ticket to the semi-finals.

Match where the title can change hands via countout:
Gorilla Monsoon defeated Johnny Valentine by disqualification in 0:13:12.
Rating: *
(Johnny Valentine retained the GCW United States Title.)

Johnny Valentine deliberately got himself counted out last month to retain his US Title against Gorilla Monsoon, so a rematch was signed for tonight where if he got counted out again, he would lose the title. Not to be detoured, the crafty Valentine found another way to escape Monsoon's wrath and keep his title at the same time - he got himself disqualified. He hit Monsoon in the back with a chair that Bill Watts handed him, but all this did was anger the monster. Valentine and Watts wisely got out of there in a heartbeat. Valentine will again have to put his title on the line against Monsoon in a match where if he gets counted out OR disqualified, he will lose the title!

The Cripplers (Ray Stevens and Nick Bockwinkel) defeated The Graham Brothers (Luke Graham and Billy Graham) when R. Stevens pinned B. Graham with the Bombs Away Kneedrop in 0:11:54.
Rating: **** 1/4

We started the semi-finals with the Graham Brothers taking on the Cripplers. The young "Superstar" Billy Graham has a boatload of talent, that's pretty clear, but he is also a raw rookie which was evidenced in this match. Billy was too overzealous and ended up getting himself pinned after Stevens' Bombs Away Kneedrop. The Grahams have all the potential in the world to be a great team, but Billy Graham is going to be some seasoning. Stevens & Bockwinkel get their chance to become World Tag Team champions in our main event.

Bobo Brazil and Peter Maivia defeated Crusher & Bruiser (The Crusher and Dick the Bruiser) when Brazil defeated Bruiser by disqualification in 0:08:47.
Rating: * 3/4

Dick the Bruiser & The Crusher said they would stop at nothing to get "their" tag titles, and this mentality cost them. Bruiser tried to be sneaky and get his trust chain from Lou Albano, which he used to waffle Brazil with to initially get the 1-2-3. Bruiser had stuffed the chain into his trunks, but he wasn't careful enough as a bit of the chain was sticking out the top. Peter Maivia brought this to referee Danny Bartfield's attention, who then reversed the decision to a disqualification. Bruiser & Crusher were irate, going after Bartfield, but Brazil & Maivia chased them out of the ring. It will be Brazil & Maivia taking on Ray Stevens & Nick Bockwinkel in the finals for the World Tag Team Titles.

Baron Mikel Scicluna defeated Bruno Sammartino by disqualification in 0:15:50.
Rating: * 3/4
(Bruno Sammartino retained the GCW World Title.)
[Arnold Skaaland interfered against Baron Mikel Scicluna.]

Many were surprised when Bruno Sammartino annoucned the hiring of Arnold Skaaland as his manager, but we learned exactly why Skaaland was hired. Bruno was defending his World Title against the crafty Baron Mikel Scicluna, who has been one of the hottest wrestlers in all of GCW. Scicluna looked like he was going to steal the World Title when he clocked Sammartino with a roll of quarters and went for the cover, Skaaland jumped in the ring and attacked Scicluna! The Royal from Malta got out of the ring in a hurry with a win over the World champion on his resume, but without the World Title. Skaaland got a bit out of control, but he saved Bruno's title reign from ending via nefarious means. Scicluna will get a rematch against Sammartino for the World Title on November 28th in Boston and has promised both Sammartino & Skaaland a big surprise.

[WORLD TAG TEAM TITLE TOURNAMENT - FINALS]: Match for the vacant GCW World Tag Team Titles:
The Cripplers (Ray Stevens and Nick Bockwinkel) defeated Bobo Brazil and Peter Maivia when R. Stevens pinned Maivia with the Bombs Away Kneedrop in 0:07:57.
Rating: ** 3/4
(The Cripplers won the GCW World Tag Team Titles.)

That left only one match, the finals of the tournament to crown the brand new World Tag Team champions with Ray Stevens & Nick Bockwinkel taking on Bobo Brazil & Peter Maivia. This is a match I would love to see when both teams are fresh, but unfortunately that was not what we got here. Brazil was clearly not all there after Dick the Bruiser had knocked him out with a chain in the semi-finals and he hadn't fully recovered yet. The High Chief more or less had to wrestle this match alone and he was overwhelmed by the Cripplers, who take the win and become the World Tag Team champions for the first time.

Card rating: ** 1/4

Match observations:

Global Championship Wrestling returns to the Boston Garden on November 28th as we inch closer to the end of the year!

WORLD TITLE - Bruno Sammartino (c) vs. Baron Mikel Scicluna
UNITED STATES TITLE (title can change hands on a countout or DQ) - Johnny Valentine (c) vs. Gorilla Monsoon
WORLD TAG TEAM TITLES - The Cripplers (c) vs. Bobo Brazil/Peter Maivia
Karl Gotch vs. Bill Watts

We also hear that DORY FUNK SR., the legend and father of Terry & Dory Jr., will be there to try to get his children to reconcile. This should be an explosive night.
